The Verb Parameters

This manual provides instructions on how to use the French verb conjugation exercise generator. 
The tool allows you to create custom exercises based on your preferences, with various options for verb selection, conjugation rules, tenses, and more.
 

What Verbs?

This section allows you to choose how the verbs are selected for the exercise.

  • Random Verbs
    The system picks verbs randomly based on your subscription.
  • Selected Verbs
    You can type in the verbs you want to practice, separated by commas (,)
    Some verbs may be skipped if they are not in your allowed subscription.

     

How Many Exercises?

Specify the number of exercises to generate. The default is 10 exercises.

 

Most Popular Verbs

The sysem can select from a subset of verbs. This option is only available for the "Random selection".

Type of Exercise

Choose the format of the exercise.

  • Complete Table
    You will be asked to fill out a full conjugation table for each verb/tense combination. 
    You can also limit the "persons" to be used or extend with the "elle(s)" option.
  • Fill in Tense
    You will fill in missing verb conjugations in a requested tense, one-by-one.

 

Group

Select which group of verbs to include based on their infinitive endings:

  • -ER  : verbs ending in -er.
  • -RE  : verbs ending in -re.
  • -IR & -ÏR : verbs ending in -ir or -ïr.

 

Level

All verbs are categorized in one of the five levels below depending on their conjugation dificulty: 

  • Normal
    These verbs are fully regular ( aimer ) or with very limited irregularity in some tenses ( prendre ).
  • Medium
    Verbs with some small irregular forms ( placer ), mostly with only one simple extra rule.
  • Hard
    These verbs have complex conjugation rules ( dépecer ) or are irregular in multiple tenses ( asseoir ).
  • Challenging
    Verbs with rare conjugation patterns, fully irregular ( ouïr )
  • Special
    Verbs with missing tenses and/or forms. These will be added later ( neger

 

Person

Select the grammatical person(s) to include in the exercise:

  • JE : First-person singular (I).
  • TU :  Second-person singular (you, informal).
  • IL-ELLE :  Third-person singular (he/she).
  • NOUS : First-person plural (we).
  • VOUS :  Second-person plural (you, formal or plural).
  • ILS-ELLES :  Third-person plural (they).

 

Allow ELLE(S)

When "il-elle" or "ils-elles" is selected, you can control the 'elle' or 'elles':

  • Include
    Includes feminine forms randomly. 
    So can be "il" or "elle" for third person singular and  "ils" or "elles" for third-person plural.
  • Exclude
    Excludes feminine forms. Only "il" and "ils" will be asked in the exercises.
  • Only
    Generates exercises only with feminine forms: elle and elles.

 

Reflexive Verbs?

Choose whether to include reflexive verbs (e.g., (se) laver ).

  • Include
    Reflexive verbs (pronominal) will be part of the exercises.
  • Exclude
    Reflexive verbs are omitted. Only verbs in actif form will be asked.
  • Only
    Only reflexive verbs will be included.

 

Auxiliary

Choose the auxiliary verb used for past tenses (e.g., passé composé):

  • Avoir or Être
    Both auxiliary verbs will be used to select verbs.
  • Avoir
    Only verbs with avoir as the auxiliary will be used.
  • Être
    Only verbs with être will as the auxiliary will be used.

 

Rules: Conjugation Behaviours

You can choose to be trained on specific conjugation rules that define how verbs behave in certain tenses or forms. 
We have tagged the verbs with 27 possible rules to choose from. You can select multiple rules.

  • aimer : regular, verbs that follow the regular conjugations rules
  • être : fully irregular, verbs that do not follow any regular patterns
  • dormir : Irregular in some tenses, have some minor conjugation exception without a specific rule  
     

ALTERNATIONS

  • manger : alteration by adding "e" after the stem letter "g" before the vowels "a" or "o"
  • craindre : alteration by adding "g" before letter "n"
  • écrire : alteration by adding "v"
  • acheter : lteration "e" to "è" before a silent syllable in Ind. présent, ind. futur and conditional tense
  • référer : lteration "é" to "è" before a silent syllable except for the futur and conditional tenses
  • célébrer : alteration "é" to "è" before a silent syllable including futur and conditional tenses (before RO rule)
  • payer : alteration "y" to "i" in some forms before a silent "e" or "a"
  • envoyer : alteration "y" to "i" in some forms before a silent "e" or "a" except futur and conditional tenses
  • croire : alteration "i" to "y" in some forms before vowel
  • placer : alteration "c" to "ç" before the vowels "a" and "o"
     

AVOIDING

  • tendre : avoiding "dt" in the 3rd person singular
  • courir : the "i" disappears in some singular of indicative present
  • acquérir : circumflex accent "^" in 3rd person
     

DOUBLING

  • courir : double the consonnant "r" in future and conditional forms
  • appeler : double the consonnant "l" to "ll" before a silent "e"
  • jeter : double the consonnant "t" to "tt" before a silent "e"
  • courir : double the consonnant "r" to "rr" before a silent "e"
     

DEFECTIVE

  • brumasser : only 3rd persons conjugations - single
  • seoir : only 3rd persons conjugations - single & plurial
  • adirer : only one Participe Passé
  • absoudre : missing persons in some tenses
  • choire : missing plurial forms
     

1990 RULES

  • intégrer : conjugate according to the new rules of 1990

 

Tenses

Choose which tenses to include in the exercise. Available tenses are:

  • Indicatif Présent (Present Indicative)
  • Indicatif Imparfait (Imperfect)
  • Indicatif Futur (Simple) (Simple Future)
  • Indicatif Passé Simple (Simple Past)
  • Indicatif Passé Composé (Present Perfect)
  • Indicatif Plus-Que-Parfait (Past Perfect)
  • Indicatif Passé Antérieur (Anterior Past)
  • Conditionnel Présent (Present Conditional)
  • Conditionnel Passé 1e Form (First Form of Past Conditional)
  • Conditionnel Passé 2e Form (Second Form of Past Conditional)
  • Subjonctif Présent (Present Subjunctive)
  • Subjonctif Imparfait (Imperfect Subjunctive)
  • Subjonctif Passé (Past Subjunctive)
  • Subjonctif Plus-Que-Parfait (Pluperfect Subjunctive)
  • Impératif Présent (Present Imperative)
  • Impératif Passé (Past Imperative)
  • Participe Présent (Present Participle)
  • Participe Passé (Past Participle)
  • Participe Passé Composé (Compound Past Participle)

 

Multiple Forms

Some verbs have more than one possible conjugation apart from the '90 rules (see Options).
The system can generate all and will check on all solutions. 
 

Options

You can specify additional options for form acceptance:

  • Accept all forms
    The generator will accept both old and new conjugation rules, e.g. intégrer
  • Only accept 1990 rules
    Only uses conjugation rules established in the 1990 spelling reform.

 

Exercise Title

You can enter a custom title for the exercise to help organize or categorize it.
